Spring 2024

Welcome back to the spring term in year 5 at Great Dunmow. This term, the focus for the children is as follows:

English

Year 5 will be focusing on the book ‘Oranges in No Man’s Land’ by Elizabeth Laird. This is a story from another culture which is set during the Lebanese Civil War. We will be analysing the story, focusing on the vocabulary used and writing different text types linked to it such as a biography. We will continue to focus on our understanding and recognition of clause structures, punctuation and develop interesting vocabulary through the use of a thesaurus. We will also be improving our reading comprehension skills through whole class shared reading sessions. This will aim to develop our retrieval and inference skills.

Maths

We initially completed our topic of multiplication and division before moving onto fractions, decimals and percentages. We will develop our understanding of these through concrete, pictorial and abstract questions applying reasoning and problem-solving skills to questions. To develop the children’s arithmetic skills, we will continue to recap arithmetic questions within lessons and will also have an arithmetic assessment on a Friday. We aim to improve our scores weekly through accurate understanding of the written methods for the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).
