Autumn 2022

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome back to year 5 for what will be another busy, exciting and challenging term at Great Dunmow. This term’s experiences for the children are as follows:

In English, year 5 will be focusing on the book ‘Friend or Foe’ linking to their Battle of Britain topic. During our lessons, we will be using a range of writing tools specific to different text types. This term we will focus on clause structures, accurate punctuation and ensuring accurate use of a thesaurus to make our writing interesting and engaging for the reader.  We will also be improving our reading comprehension skills through group and whole class shared reading sessions. This will aim to develop our vocabulary and understanding of a variety of texts.

In Maths, year 5 will be concentrating on number, developing our knowledge of place value and the written methods for the four calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).  To develop the children’s arithmetic skills, we will also be completing an arithmetic assessment every Friday. We aim to improve our scores weekly through accurate recall of times tables up to 12 x 12 and a secure understanding of written methods.
