Summer 2024
Welcome back to the summer term in Year 5 at Great Dunmow. This term, the focuses for the children are as follows:
English
Year 5 will be looking at traditional tales and writing our own fables and Greek myths making sure features of the text type were included within them. We will continue to embed our grammatical understanding and knowledge of spelling rules. Later in the term, we will also be looking at the book Wonder by R.J. Palacio. We will be writing from different perspectives and varying the formality of language used. Whole class shared reading sessions will focus on discussing a variety of extracts and using retrieval and inference skills to answer questions on the text.
Maths
We will look at shape, decimals, geometry and measurements. We will develop our fluency understanding and apply reasoning and problem-solving skills to a variety of questions. To develop our arithmetic skills, we will continue to recap arithmetic questions within lessons and will also have a weekly arithmetic assessment. We aim to improve our scores weekly through accurate understanding of the written methods for the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).
